About
Mezzo-soprano Sophie Kidwell is the 2024 winner of the Young Welsh Singer of the Year competition and a prize winner of the 43rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2025. She has been engaged at Theater Basel for the past two years, where she most recently jumped in as Carmen (Carmen, Bizet) with the Basler Sinfonieorchester. She went on to sing a second performance in the title role in the closing night of the production in June 2025. Praised in the German, Austrian and Swiss press for her “voluminous, velvety smooth and elegant voice”, distinguished by an "impressive usable range" and "sonorous lower register", Sophie has been described as "a name that opera fans should remember".
Sophie’s further roles at Theater Basel have included Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi), Alto Soloist (Requiem, Mozart), Flora (La Traviata, Verdi), Flosshilde (Das Rheingold, Wagner), Grimgerde (Die Walküre, Wagner), Flosshilde (Götterdämmerung, Wagner), Frédéric (Mignon, Thomas), among others.
Other career highlights include Carmen at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, and in the Austrian premiere of La Tragédie de Carmen at Landestheater Linz with the Bruckner Orchester, as well as a jump-in as Pauline (La Vie Parisienne, Offenbach) at Stadttheater Bühnen Bern.
In the 2025/26 season Sophie looks forward to making her Italian debut in Palermo at Teatro Massimo, along with her role debut as Olga (Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky) at Theater Aachen, Maddalena (Rigoletto, Verdi) at Opéra de Lausanne, as well as the Mezzo solos in Dvorák’s Stabat Mater with the Berner Symphonieorchester.
